Kowhai

And here are the lovely flowers of the kowhai, a New Zealand tree not found anywhere else and loved by our native nectar-eating birds. Posted by Picasa

I grew up in Warkworth on the "Kowhai Coast" where the kowhai is the town emblem. There's nothing quite a magical as a patch of native bush with kowhais in bloom and tui bird song...

The flowers are very unusual. What amazes me from here in Canada is how short the winter is over there. We look forward to 6 months or more of snow and sub zero temps. Good thing I don't mind the cold!

We have a temperate climate here, with 4 quite distict seasons. We'll still have some cold weather, and there's usually an October storm that brings snow to the high country.
